Sieve tube sap exuded from the cut hypocotyl of castor bean seedlings (Ricinus communis L.) was found to contain 0.2–0.5 mmol m?3abscisic acid (ABA). The ABA concentration in the sieve tube sap always exceeded that in root pressure exudate under a wide range of water supply. Exudation of sieve tube sap from the cut hypocotyls caused water loss, and this induced ‘water shortage’ in the cotyledons which resulted in the ABA concentration in the cotyledons increasing by 3-fold and that in the sieve tube sap increasing by up to 50-fold within 7h. The wounded surface of the cut hypocotyl was not responsible for the ABA increase. Incubation of the cotyledons of endosperm-free seedlings in various ABA concentrations (up to 100 mmol m?3) increased the ABA concentration in sieve tube sap. The concomitant increase in ABA, both in cotyledons and in sieve tube sap, had no effect on the phloem loading of sucrose, K+ and Mg2+ within the experimental period, i.e. up to 10h. It can be concluded that (i) the phloem is an important transport path for ABA, (ii) water stress at the phloem loading sites elevates phloem-mobile ABA, which may then serve as a water stress signal for sinks, for example stem and roots (not only for stomata), and (iii) the ABA concentration of cells next to or in the phloem is more important than the average ABA content in the whole cotyledon for determining the ABA concentration in sieve tube sap. 相似文献

Summary We tested whether intra- and interspecific competition could affect habitat selection in the two most abundant tenebrionid beetles,Physadesmia globosa andOnymacris rugatipennis, in a dry riverbed in the Namib desert. The spatial distributions of these beetles at the microhabitat scale were negatively correlated. We performed a removal experiment, progressively removing first 25% and then a further 25% of the population of the most abundant species,P. globosa, under the trees where most of the preferred food of both species is concentrated. There was no response ofO. rugatipennis to this removal in the tree habitat. In the open, barely-vegetated habitat where mostO. rugatipennis are found, the number of this species caught in pitfall traps increased following both removals and decreased followingP. globosa replacement under the trees. It appears that intraspecific competition forces someP. globosa to occupy the open habitat. Interspecific competition betweenP. globosa andO. rugatipennis in the open habitat reduces the number ofO. rugatipennis that can co-exist withP. globosa there. Removal ofP. globosa under the trees allows conspecifics in the open habitat to move under the trees, releasingO. rugatipennis in the open habitat from competition. This then results in an increase in the numbers ofO. rugatipennis in the open habitat as a result of immigration from neighbouring areas. We found that differences in foraging efficiency, measured as giving-up times in artificial food patches, create a likely mechanism of co-existence that explains the distinct preferences of these two species for tree and open habitats. 相似文献

Heathlands, dominated byCalluna vulgaris, are located along the western seaboard of Europe. Most undergo a cyclical succession as the heather plants pass through four definable growth-phases over a period of about 30 years. Examples of upland heathlands are drawn from the North York Moors National Park, an area of Jurassic rocks in the north of England (approximately 54°25N, 0°55W). Botanical diversity is low. In a survey of 10 heathlands selected to encompass the botanical variation of the heathlands of the National Park, only 40 species of higher plants and 31 species of mosses were recorded (2.2% and 4.5% of the British flora, respectively).However, diversity of some invertebrate groups is high. Totals of 54 species of carabid beetles and 127 species of spiders were recorded (15.3% and 20.4% of the British fauna, respectively). At least two environmental gradients appear to influence the species composition of the invertebrate assemblages: a wet-dry gradient and the height of the vegetation (corresponding to the growth-phase of the heather). Experimental areas on three heathlands were burnt and cut, the traditional and more modern methods of heather management. Analysis of both the spider and beetle data indicated that the species assemblages were primarily influenced by the growth-phase of the heather. Some of the nationally rarer species are associated with the open conditions of recently-cut or burnt heathland. An altitudinal effect was also inferred since heathland at 410 m above sea level tended to be less species-rich than heathlands at ca 260 m above sea level.These results present a paradox. Although botanical diversity is extremely low, and although it is a non-natural ecosystem maintained by fire and grazing management to prevent a succession to woodland, arthropod diversity can be extremely high. The discussion focuses on the importance of upland heathlands in the conservation of insect and spider diversity, as well as on the value of these upland areas for conservation more generally.C. vulgaris is seen to be a key species on which many other species depend. Rates of transpiration and xylem sap flow were continuously measured in individual twigs in the upper crown of an 18-year-old
spruce. Two gas exchange chambers were run simultaneously under identical conditions. One of two equivalent twigs was exposed
to pure air whereas the other received the ozone-enriched air of the site. A third gas exchange chamber in mid-crown ran independently
with normal outside air and was used for basic experiments. At certain times needles were sampled for water potential measurements.
Chamber humidity was reduced step by step and the transpiration and xylem sap flow rates were permanently compared. It turned
out that sap flow keeps up with transpiration without lagging as long as chamber humidity is high and the twigs outside the
chamber are not subject to substantial evaporative demand. However, in warm summer weather and with high flow rates sap flow
is no longer sufficient. As the balance quotient (uptake/release) of 0.8 was reached the stomata began to close and water
balance improved. The flux quotient increased far above 1.0 without water potential of the needles, which had decreased before,
increasing significantly. The balance quotient of the twig in ozone-enriched air fell to relatively low values and only increased
again correspondingly slowly due to lagging stomatal closure. Despite increased water uptake after the light phase, the ozone-treated
twig ran into a water deficit in the daily balance during the course of an uninterrupted drought period. Water deficit increased
from day to day and only disappeared with the next rainfall. For providing insight into the ozone effect shown in this study
it was thought necessary to discuss comprehensively the controversial views of the stomatal control mechanism. The results
show that the stomata react to small scale changes in water status as expected for an effective negative feedback system.
The less sensitive reaction of the stomata under the influence of ozone confirms earlier results. Increased severity and duration
of the daily drought stress loads were attributed to a lag in adjustment due to poor stomatal control. The demonstrated function
mechanism shows that the detrimental effect of ozone is dependent on weather conditions.

The northwestern province of Costa Rica is a marginal coffee growing area. At the onset of the rainy season low redox potentials probably induce the mobilization of soil Mn resulting in enhanced plant uptake of Mn. To test this hypothesis we monitored from April to the end of June 1995 the mobile Mn in the soil and nutrient and Mn concentrations in leaves and xylem sap of coffee plants. Every 2 weeks we took aggregate and bulk soil samples. The aggregates were mechanically separated into interior and exterior, air-dried and all soil samples were extracted with 1 M NH4NO3. We also extracted the field moist soil with distilled water. In addition, the 3rd and the youngest pair of coffee leaves and xylem sap were sampled and analyzed. According to the results of leaf analyses the nutrient supply of the coffee plants in general seemed to be balanced. However, Mn concentrations of 223 mg kg-1 in the 3rd leaf pair at 18 April were above the optimum and the youngest leaves indicated Fe deficiency, but senescent leaves accumulated Fe and overcame the deficiency. Manganese concentrations in the xylem sap showed a pronounced maximum 2 weeks prior to a similar maximum of mobile Mn in the aggregate exterior. But in general the temporal variation of nutrient concentrations (especially Ca and Mg) in the plants are well correlated with the easily extractable nutrient concentrations in bulk soil. Probably due to its specific absorption and high rates of redistribution within the plant, K in the soil extracts did not correlate with plant concentrations. Element concentrations of youngest leaves could not be correlated with soil concentrations and are not considered to be an adequate tool for monitoring current nutrient uptake. Since plant element concentrations did not correlate with the aggregate interior, plants probably cannot use that nutrient source efficiently. 相似文献

Enzyme and dispersal polymorphisms of the saltmarsh carabid beetles Pogonus chalceus and Dicheirotrichus gustavii were studied in European populations varying in size and in isolation in space and time. D. gustavii, a constantly fullwinged species, has a larger genetic diversity and a smaller genetic differentiation between populations
than the wing-polymorphic P. chalceus. Clear relationships between population or site characteristics and genetic structure were not observed, except for the special
position taken by some small populations in both species. The dispersal power of P. chalceus in small populations is larger than in large populations, suggesting that these populations are unstable and/or young. Small
populations, however, do not always show a lower genetic diversity than large populations, as would be expected from genetic
drift. Dispersal power in P. chalceus declines with increasing age of the saltmarsh, probably due to continuous emigration of winged individuals. Age and size
of saltmarshes, although difficult to study independently, both appear to be important in determining the genetic structure
of saltmarsh beetles. Maximum diversity in both parameters is therefore recommended as an optimal nature conservation strategy.

While the cultivated olive tree (Olea europaea L.) is known to be sclerophyllous and effective at tolerating drought, little is known of its short-term water-use dynamics for most studies have been based on longer-term, water-balance information. We present here, for the first time, heat-pulse measurements of the sap flux measured not only within the semi-trunk of an olive tree, but also within a root excavated close to the stump. One tree in the olive grove near Seville in Spain had regularly received basin irrigation during the summer, whereas the other, growing on this deep silt loam, had been without water for over 3 months. Following a flood irrigation of 730 L to a dyked area around the tree, the regularly-irrigated olive maintained a transpiration rate of 1.65 mm3 mm–2 d–1, on a leaf area basis, for only 3 days following the irrigation. This rate was maintained for a total consumption of 110 L. It then began again to limit its rate of water use with transpiration falling below that predicted for well-watered conditions by the Penman-Monteith equation. The flow of sap in the near-surface root dropped concomitantly. Meanwhile the unirrigated tree was using water at just 0.78 mm d–1. Yet following an irrigation of 870 L it only lifted its consumption to 1.12 mm d–1, on a leaf area basis. Neither did it recover its leaf water potential following this wetting because of an inability to refill cavitated vessels. Molecular biogeography of cave life: a study using mitochondrial DNA from bathysciine beetles 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study focuses on phylogenetic relationships in two distinct species assemblages of cave-dwelling beetles with similar disjunct distributions in the Pyrenees and Sardinia. One assemblage contains six species in the genera Ovobathysciola (four species) and Patriziella (two species) on Sardinia and one species of Anillochlamys in the Pyrenees. Species within the two Sardinian genera co-occur in the same karst area. Although, they are believed to be each others closest relative, they have very different body types (globular body with short appendages in Ovobathysciola; elongated body with long appendages in Patriziella), which are believed to reflect different degrees of adaptation to cave life. The other assemblage of Bathysciine beetles includes three species in the genus Speonomus in the Pyrenees and one on Sardinia. All the species are rare and many are endangered. One issue of particular interest was whether Ovobathysciola and Patriziella are reciprocally monophyletic or whether each of the Patriziella species evolved independently from the co-occurring Ovobathysciola species, as the similar morphology of the Patriziella species might be due to convergence rather than common descent. Based on DNA sequences of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) region of the mtDNA, neither scenario was supported. Rather, the two Patriziella species are sister taxa embedded within the Ovobathysciola radiation. In addition, the well-dated geological history of this region allowed us to calibrate absolute rates of COI evolution, the first such estimates for any insect. Finally this study suggests that the evolutionary acquisition of typical cave adaptations (e.g., elongated body and appendages) may occur at about the same rate as loss of traits (e.g., eyes and pigmentation) associated with cave life. 相似文献
